Starter Analysis
UNUSUAL SUSPECT won his only race going a mile on the turf at Del Mar, but has run well in all but one (his debut) of his five starts. His race in the Real Quiet was pretty good; closing from last in a six-horse field against a moderate pace, he got up for second. Had a similar trip in the Generous (GIII) during the Turf Festival. He should get a little better pace scenario here with the larger field, but still needs to show some improvement to be considered a major player. His consistency is admirable, but the feeling is that there are others ahead of him at this point.

Pedigree Analysis :: Dark bay or brown colt, 2; by Unusual Heat - Penpont (NZ) (Crested Wave)
UNUSUAL SUSPECT is by Unusual Heat, a son of the incomparable Nureyev. Unusual Heat raced in Ireland, winning three listed races before being retired after his tenth start. He stands stud at Old English Rancho in California. His first foals raced in 2001, and he has five stakes winners to date, with Tucked Away (Clement Hirsch Handicap GII) his lone graded winner. Unusual Suspect comes from the New Zealand mare Penpont. Interestingly, all five of her foals are by the same sire. Of the two that have raced, they both have found the winners circle. Penpont is a daughter of Crested Wave, winner of Belmont’s Futurity (GI) and third in the Champagne (GI) as a juvenile.
