Pedigree Analysis
WANNA RUNNER comes into the El Camino off a third place finish behind Brother Derek and Stevie Wonderboy in the San Rafael (GII), so he obviously knows what it's like to face top notch competition. With the exception of A.P. Warrior, that can't be said for the rest of this field. This Baffert trainee will likely be on or near the lead from the outset, and won't have Brother Derek breathing down his neck this time, which likely softened him up quite a bit. Has a pair of two-turn wins to his credit, as well as owning the top speed figure in the field. Gets the services of a great gate rider in David Flores. Will likely be the bettors' second choice behind A.P. Warrior, and note that that one dusted him when they faced one another at Hollywood last summer. That's a distant memory now, though, and he seems to have a class advantage over most in here. Can't fault those who want to bet him on top, particularly if you feel he is going to have things his way on the front end. Wanna Runner is from the first crop of El Corredor, a winner of seven of ten lifetime outings, earning over $727,000. An impressive miler, El Corredor took the Cigar Mile (GI), beating older horses in the process, and consecutive runnings of the Del Mar Breeders' Cup Handicap (GII). He's gotten off to an excellent at stud, siring the multiple graded winning filly Adieu; El Viento, a grade one winner in Puerto Rico; and Itty Bitty Pretty, victress in the Santa Ysabel (GIII) earlier this month at Santa Anita. Wanna Runner comes from a mare, Shebandowana, who was primarily a spinter, but also won two of five starts on the turf. She has some fairly accomplished siblings in Miss Indy Anna, who took the Churchill Downs Breeders' Cup Handicap (GII) and the Columbia Stakes (GIII) and never finished worse than second in ten lifetime starts; and Time Limit, another who was at his best sprinting but did manage to run third going two turns in the Risen Star (GIII). Shebandowana's offspring haven't fared quite as well. Wanna Runner is her fifth foal, and just the second to win to date. His bottom half of his pedigree (his dam is a granddaughter of Mr. Prospector) his tilted considerably towards races less than one mile.
