RAW SILK has the distinction of winning two maiden races – she was disqualified in her first turf start last November, got a five month break after that, and came back to win on the grass very impressively. That prompted trainer Tom Albertrani to try stakes company for her latest two starts, and after a third in the Gaviola, she wired the field in the Sands Point (gr. IIT). With two wins in three starts this year, she comes into the American Oaks in sharp form as she stretches out to 10 furlongs for the first time.
Raw Silk is by Malibu Moon, who stands at Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, Kentucky. He is the sire of 25 stakes winners, topped by 2004 champion 2-year-old Declan’s Moon and the Grade One winning filly Malibu Mint, and Moon Catcher, who won the 2007 Delaware Oaks (gr. II). Malibu Moon raced only twice, breaking his maiden going five furlongs at Hollywood, before being retired. Raw Silk is just the second foal, and only winner from her dam Silken Sash (IRE). Silken Sash is by one of the greatest turf sires of all time in Danehill.
