INGLEWOOD, Calif. (May 14, 2010)-Overcoming a slow beginning and some severe traffic woes, favored Teamwork won the $45,400 allowance feature on Friday night at Hollywood Park.
Making his first start since finishing second – for a third consecutive race – last Aug. 20 at Del Mar, the 4-year-old Bertrando colt out of the Rahy mare Untamed Beauty prevailed by a head over The Bat Signal, who was also returning from a layoff.
Trained by Cliff Sise, Jr. for owner-breeders Pam and Marty Wygod, Teamwork, who was ridden by Joel Rosario and carried 124 pounds, won for the second time in nine starts. The top prize of $25,800 in the race restricted to California breds increased his earnings to $105,400. He completed six furlongs on Cushion Track in 1:09.70.
Worse than third only twice in his career, Teamwork paid $7.60, $4.60 and $3.40.
Nearly 8-1 in his initial appearance since Oct. 8 and looking for his fourth win at Hollywood Park, The Bat Signal returned $7.40 and $5. Doldolrbillyall, who edged pacesetter Raetodandty by a neck for third, paid $6.60 to show.
Surfacing in California after an easy maiden win on the grass at Turf Paradise last month, Raetodandty set quick fractions (21.82 and 44.74 for the first half mile) before weakening late. Mensa Heat, the 5-2 second choice, finished fifth.
Last out of the gate in the field of 11, Teamwork was bumped and had to steady while racing along the rail in the stretch, but Rosario was eventually able to angle outside the tiring leader and get the best of The Bat Signal.
Rafael Bejarano, Martin Pedroza and Joe Talamo won twice Friday. It was the first multiple win day of the meet for both Pedroza and Talamo.
Pedroza’s victories came with Good Night Gyrene ($16) in the fourth and Sky Search $(7.60) in the sixth.
Talamo won with favored Lullabytime ($3.40) in the first and Good Brother ($23.80) in the third.
Extending his lead in the jockey standings to 27-21 over Tyler Baze, Bejarano won the second with Missdealornodeal ($10.40) and the eighth with Movie Duty ($4.60).
Racing will resume on Saturday. There is an early post time of 11 a.m. in conjunction with the 135th running of the Preakness Stakes from Pimlico.
Gates at Hollywood Park will open at 8:30 a.m. The first of 10 imports from Pimlico is at 9:18 a.m. Scheduled post time for the Preakness is 3:12 p.m.
Hollywood Park’s 11 race card is highlighted by the $150,000 Jim Murray Memorial Handicap, a Grade II at 1 ½ miles on turf.
