Jockey Quotes

DAVID FLORES, TURBULENT DESCENT, Winner: “That’s what happened with Zenyatta. I won the first three like that. I don’t want to say too much. She does what she does in a nice and easy way. She’s got the talent, she pricks her ears, she gets the lead and just looks around like she’s not even trying. Mike (Puype) said just do what is necessary and take it one race at a time. I just want to keep it simple, very simple.”
MIKE SMITH, ZAZU, Second: “She ran dynamite. I was right back of the one who won. I wanted to be back a little more, but every time I tried to ease her back, the winner stayed right with me. If I went wide, she went wide, too.”

Trainer Quotes

MIKE PUYPE, TURBULENT DESCENT, Winner— “What can you say about a horse that hasn’t even been asked to run two times now. She was just on a high cruising speed. Watch David (Flores) down the lane, he never even moved his hands. She’s got all the right ingredients to run a distance and do about anything. It was nice to watch her win, because naturally I was concerned about bringing her back in 20 days. So the game plan today was to win but not have to ask any more of her than we had to. This was just an ultimately confident ride. To be in the grandstand and watch this was just amazing. It’s not just the time, it was the way she did it. How many horses do you see in stakes company do stuff like this? Without a doubt she’s right up there with the best I’ve ever trained. It’s two races in and you’ve got to keep them sound, but at this point, it’s hard not to believe that. She’s a brilliant filly. If she comes back well, the Hollywood Starlet has to be the plan. She’s a made filly. She’s worth a fortune already and would be worth a bigger fortune after a Grade 1.”

JOHN SADLER, ZAZU, Second: “My filly was a little closer than I wanted and she was very, very wide. She never got a chance to drop over and save ground. But she ran well, so we’re very happy.”

NOTES: No winner of the Moccasin has ever captured the Hollywood Starlet….The $250,000-guaranteed Starlet, which is run at 1 1/16 miles over Cushion Track, will be run for the 30th time Dec. 11….Flores’ only other Moccasin victory came aboard Perfect Six in 1998.
