INGLEWOOD, Calif. (May 13, 2010)-Making her Hollywood Park debut and one of two 3-year-olds in the field of eight, Sweet Sophia led throughout at 16-1 to win the $44,200 turf feature on Thursday.

Sweet Sophia, who faded to last after setting the pace on April 4 at Santa Anita, assumed command immediately from her inside post and remained strong to the finish, winning by 2 ¼ lengths over 3-2 favorite Surfer Girl.

Owned by Sweet Sophia, Inc. and trained by Gary Mandella, the daughter of Smarty Jones and the Pleasant Colony mare Colonial Ally won for the second time in four starts. She pushed her earnings to $48,720.

Purchased for $150,000 as a yearling at the Keeneland September sale in 2008, Sweet Sophia returned $34.80, $11.60 and $6.40. Ridden for the first time by David Flores, she ran the six furlongs in 1:09.56.

Owned by popular syndicated radio and television personality Jim Rome’s Jungle Racing LLC, Surfer Girl was second for the third time in five starts in the United States for trainer Mike Puype.

Winless since defeating maidens at first asking in her native Brazil in February, 2008, Surfer Girl, who was ridden by leading jockey Rafael Bejarano, paid $3.20 and $2.20.

Richelle’s Joy, closest to the winner for most of the race, was a half-length back in third and a head in front of Full Mandate, the other 3-year-old. The show price on Richelle’s Joy was $3.60.

Bejarano’s lone win on Thursday came aboard 6-5 choice My Boy Walsh in the third. This ended a streak of seven consecutive multiple victory days for the rider. He holds a 25-21 advantage over Tyler Baze in the Hollywood Park standings.

Flores was the only jockey to double. Besides Sweet Sophia, he also won the first with 9-1 shot So Delish.

Racing continues Friday with post time at 7:05 p.m.

Following the conclusion of the eight race card – approximately 10:30 p.m. – a concert featuring Steel Pulse will begin at the North Park Lawn.
