INGLEWOOD, Calif. (November 8, 2013)— Making his first start since July 14, Spirit Rules rallied from last to upset favored Oliver’s Tale in the $57,390 feature Friday at Betfair Hollywood Park.

Idle since finishing seventh of eight in his turf debut during the Spring/Summer meet, the 4-year-old gelded son of Tribal Rule came widest of all under jockey Iggy Puglisi to run past the 7-5 choice in the final yards.

The one-length win was the third in seven starts for Spirit Rules, who is out of the Danzatore mare Heavenly Lady. All of the California bred’s victories have come in four races over Cushion Track.

Owned by a partnership that includes Peter Accardy, Craig Siedler, Jim and Mar Xitco and trainer Paul Aguirre, Spirit Rules completed the six furlongs in 1:10.09. He paid $11.20, $4.40 and $3 as the 9-2 third choice while pushing his earnings to $122,098.

In his initial appearance since he finished second behind the ill-fated – and double Grade I winner – Points Offthebench April 6 at Santa Anita, Oliver’s Tale quickly engaged Justa Runner for the lead after breaking from the inside in the field of eight.

No worse than second in his four-race career, Oliver’s Tale disposed of Justa Runner to draw clear in the stretch, but couldn’t contain the surging Spirit Rules. The 4-year-old son of E Dubai, who finished three-quarters of a length in front of 4-1 second choice Imperial Fortune, returned $3.60 and $2.60. The show price on Imperial Fortune was $3.

Racing will resume Saturday. Post time is 12:30 p.m. Track gates will open at 9:55 a.m. for simulcasts.

Anoakia Stakes winner Bajan and Lemon de Oro, a recent maiden winner at Keeneland for trainer H. Graham Motion, are among six fillies and mares scheduled to go seven furlongs over Cushion Track in the $100,000 Moccasin Stakes. The Moccasin, which returns to the Betfair Hollywood Park stakes calendar after a one-year absence, is the second of nine races.

This is also the first of seven Saturdays during the Autumn meet that will feature a guaranteed Pick Six pool of $150,000. If the pool reaches $200,000, there will be $1 Happy Hour food and drink specials at Whittingham’s Pub and Betfair Players’ Lounge.

Additionally, if there is a single winning ticket in the Pick Six – purchased either on track or through Television Games Network (TVG) – the holder of the ticket will receive a bonus – a new Prius courtesy of Toyota of Orange.
