Scherer Magic Tries To Stay Perfect In Best Pal Stakes

Scherer Magic, under Joe Talamo, draws away from Strong Wind (Kevin Krigger) and Amarish (Edwin Maldonado) to win the Hollywood Juvenile Championship.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (August 3, 2012)—Hollywood Juvenile Championship winner Scherer Magic will try to remain undefeated in the $150,000 Best Pal Stakes Sunday at Del Mar.

A Grade II for 2-year-olds at 6 ½ furlongs over Cushion Track, the Best Pal is the eighth of nine races Sunday. Post time is 2 p.m. Track gates at Betfair Hollywood Park will open at 10 a.m. for simulcasts.

In his initial race after being claimed for $50,000 by trainer John Sadler for owners Gary and Cecil Barber, Scherer Magic rallied to win the Grade III Juvenile by 2 ½ lengths. This Cushion Track score came one month after he debuted with a 7 ¼ length romp over maidens.

An Iowa bred gelding by Doneraile Court out of the Touch Gold mare She’s a Nasty One, Scherer Magic has earned $107,400. He could be the second Juvenile winner in three years to repeat in the Best Pal, joining J P’s Gusto, who won both races in 2010.

The field of eight also includes a pair of first out winners – Heir of Storm and Heir Kitty –and Cinderella Stakes winner Miss Empire, who will take on males for the Barbers and Kevn Tsujihara and trainer Peter Miller.
