Scherer Magic Hopes To Complete Juvenile-DM Futurity Sweep

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (September 2, 2012)—Scherer Magic, the champion 2-year-old male of the Spring/Summer meet at Betfair Hollywood Park, will seek the most lucrative win of his young career in the $300,000 Del Mar Futurity Wednesday at Del Mar.

A Grade I at seven furlongs, the Futurity is the eighth of 10 races on Del Mar’s closing day card. Post time Wednesday is 2:05 p.m. Track gates at Betfair Hollywood Park will open at 10 a.m. for simulcasts.

Owned by Gary and Cecil Barber and trained by John Sadler, Scherer Magic debuted June 14 at Betair Hollywood Park and easily dispatched of $50,000 maidens. Claimed out of the race by his current connections, the son of Doneraile Court and the Touch Gold mare She’s a Nasty one responded with a 2 ½ length victory in the Grade III Hollywood Juvenile Championship July 14.

In his Del Mar debut, the Iowa bred finished fifth as the even-money favorite in the Grade II Best Pal Aug. 5. He will try to rebound in the Futurity with a new rider – Corey Nakatani – and could become the second Hollywood Juvenile winner in the last three years to repeat in the Del Mar Futurity. J P’s Gusto won both races in 2010.

Other leading contenders in the Futurity, which is a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In’’ event for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Nov. 3 at Santa Anita, include first out winners Gabriel Charles, Capo Bastone and Know More, who debuted for owner J. Paul Reddam with a half-length victory in the Best Pal.
