Rosario Scales Handsome Mike For O’Neill In Vinery Racing Spiral

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (March 23, 2012)—Jockey Joel Rosario, the leading rider at both the Spring/Summer and Autumn meets in 2011 at Betfair Hollywood Park, will be at Turfway Park in Kentucky Saturday to ride Handsome Mike in the $500,000 Vinery Racing Spiral.

A Grade III for 3-year-olds at 1 1/8 miles over Polytrack, the Spiral is the 10th race on the program. Scheduled post time for a race won a year ago by eventual Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom is 2:45 p.m. PST. Track gates at Betfair Hollywood Park will open at 10:15 a.m. for simulcasts.

Owned by J. Paul Reddam and trained by Doug O’Neill, Handsome Mike will be seeking his first graded stakes victory. A son of Scat Daddy and the Smart Strike mare Classic Strike, he has won once in six races and earned $80,780. He finished seventh after setting the pace in the Grade I CashCall Futurity last Dec. 17 at Betfair Hollywood Park, an event sponsored by Reddam.

Two other locally based jockeys have mounts in the Spiral. Corey Nakatani has the call on California Derby winner Russian Greek for Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer while Martin Pedroza will ride Red Jack for another Hall of Fame conditioner D. Wayne Lukas.

One race before the Vinery, More Than Love, who won the Grade III Miesque last Nov. 25 at Betfair Hollywood Park, will make her synthetic track debut in the $100,000 Bourbonette Oaks.

A Grade III for 3-year-old fillies at one mile, the Bourbonette Oaks has a scheduled post time of 2:12 p.m. PST. Owned by Newton Anner Stud and trained by John Terranova II, More Than Love is a daughter of More Than Ready and the Zafonic mare I’m in Love. She’s won two of four and banked $113,150. Nakatani will ride in her initial try with blinkers.
