INGLEWOOD, Calif. (July 16, 2009) — Spring House, third two years ago, will try to top the $1-million mark in career earnings with a victory in Sunday’s $150,000 Sunset Handicap as the 55-day Spring/Summer Meet comes to a close at Hollywood Park.

Spring House, a winner of nine of 41 starts for earnings of $941,284, enters the Grade II event following a victory in the Golden Gate Fields Turf at 1 3/8 miles. He will be running a furlong farther in the 69th running of the Sunset, which will be contested over 1 ½ miles on the Lakeside Turf Course.

Spring House, trained by Julio Canani and owned by former Hollywood Park chairman R.D. Hubbard, is a 7-year-old gelding by Chester House. He has won two of five starts in 2009, including the Grade II San Luis Obispo Handicap, when he beat fellow Sunset starter Obrigado at 1 ½ miles on the Santa Anita Park turf course.

The Sunset, which will run as the third race on Sunday’s nine-race program, will line up as follows from the rail out:

Obrigado, with Joel Rosario up, carries 120 pounds; Porfido, David Flores, 117; Black Astor, Joseph Talamo, 114, and Spring House, Alex Solis, 121.

French-bred Obrigado, winner of the San Luis Obispo two years ago, finished eighth in the Golden Gate Fields Turf, but came back to win the Grade III Round Table Handicap here at 1 ¾ miles in June. A 6-year-old gelding owned by Gary Seidler and Peter Vegso, the Neil Drysdale trainee enters the Sunset with six wins in 31 starts for earnings of $666,504.

Porfido, a 7-year-old Chilean-bred trained by Bobby Frankel, finished third in the 2008 Sunset. He has won eight of 33 starts for earnings of $513,908. Most recently, he finished second behind Obrigado in the Round Table.

Black Astor, a 5-year-old from the Lisa Lewis barn, has won three of 15 starts for earnings of $139,624. The bay gelding has not started since finishing fifth in the San Marcos in January at Santa Anita.
