INGLEWOOD, Calif. (June 26, 2009) — New Zealand-bred Black Mamba will carry high weight of 120 pounds as she attempts to defend her title in Sunday’s 44th running of the $150,000 Beverly Hills Handicap at Hollywood Park.

Black Mamba, a 6-year-old mare who races for Doubledown Stable, won the 2008 Beverly Hills and John C. Mabee Handicap at Del Mar when partnered for the first time with jockey Garrett Gomez. They will be re-united Sunday as Black Mamba seeks her first 2009 victory in her third start of the year.

The Beverly Hills, a Grade II event at 1 ¼ miles on the Lakeside Turf Course, drew a field of six, which lines up as follows from the rail out:

Hot n’ Dusty, with Alex Solis up, carries 113 pounds; Toque de Queda, Victor Espinoza, 115; Black Mamba, Gomez, 120; You Lift Me Up, Joel Rosario, 114; Restless Soul, Rafael Bejarano, 116, and Charming Legacy, Joseph Talamo, 114.

Black Mamba, trained by John Sadler, enters the Beverly Hills with four wins and seven seconds in 25 starts for earnings of $718,851. Fourth in the Gamely at 1 1/8 miles here in May, she finished second — beaten a nose — in the 1 ¼-mile Santa Barbara Handicap in April.

Restless Soul, a 5-year-old daughter of Singspiel, won the Yerba Buena at 1 3/8 miles in April at Golden Gate Fields. She has won two of three starts in 2009.

Toque de Queda, a two-time winner in 14 starts, was beaten less than one length while finishing third as the favorite in the Santa Barbara. Last outing the Bobby Frankel trainee she finished sixth in the Gamely.

Irish-bred Charming Legacy has won four of 15 starts; Hot n’ Dusty, entered in Saturday’s Vanity Handicap, has won three of 16 races, and You Lift Me Up, also entered in the Vanity, has won five of 22 starts.

The Beverly Hills will run as the eighth race on Sunday’s nine-race program at Hollywood Park. First post time is 1 p.m.
