Last Two Hollywood Derby Winners Return Saturday

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (February 7, 2013)—Unbridled Command and Ultimate Eagle, the last two winners of the Hollywood Derby, will be in action in different races Saturday at Gulfstream Park.

Unbridled Command, who won the Grade I last Nov. 25 when shipped to Betfair Hollywood Park by trainer Tom Bush, will make his first start as a 4-year-old in the $300,000 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap.

About 90 minutes later, Ultimate Eagle, who led throughout en route to a 14-1 upset in the 2011 Hollywood Derby, will make his first start outside California in the $500,000 Donn Handicap.

Both the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap and the Donn are Grade I events and both are contested at 1 1/8 miles. The former is the eighth of 12 races while the latter is the 11th. Scheduled post time for the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap is 1:01 p.m. PST. The Donn is supposed to go at 2:32 p.m. PST. Track gates at Betfair Hollywood Park will open at 10:15 a.m. for simulcasts.

Owned by a partnership that includes breeder Lewis Lakin, Colleen Bamford and Dave Bernsen, Unbridled Command finished 2012 with five consecutive victories. The New York bred son of Master Command and the Unbridled’s Song mare Unbridled Betty has won six of 10 overall and banked $469,040.

Trained by Mike Pender for owner B.J. Wright, Ultimate Eagle will be trying to end a three race losing streak in the Donn. The 5-year-old Mizzen Mast horse out of the Captain Bodgit mare hasn’t won since taking the Grade II Strub by 7 ¼ lengths Feb. 4, 2012. He’s won five of 12 overall and earned $547,800.
