Hollywood Park Stakes Winners Top San Diego `Cap

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (July 28, 2011)—Aggie Engineer, whose graded stakes victories include the Native Diver Handicap last Dec. 4 at Hollywood Park, will try for his first victory over the Del Mar Polytrack in the $200,000 San Diego Handicap Saturday.

A Grade II at 1 1/16 miles, the San Diego is a prep for the Grade I Pacific Classic, which will be run Sunday, August 28.

Owned by breeders Ward and Roberta Williford and trained by Paddy Gallagher, Aggie Engineer is a 6-year-old gelded son of E Dubai and the Dixieland Band mare Papalma. He’s won seven of 20 and earned $394,280. Most recently, he was third behind Twirling Candy and Setsuko in the Grade II Californian June 4 at Hollywood Park.

Two other members of the San Diego cast also have graded wins at Hollywood Park on their resumes – Golden Itiz, a 4-year-old Tiznow colt owned by Mace and Samantha Siegel’s Jay Em Ess Stable and trained by Ron Ellis, won the Grade III Affirmed Handicap June 19, 2010 while Tres Borrachos upset Two Step Salsa and Colonel John in the 2008 Swaps Stakes.

Now owned by George Hicker and trained by Marty Jones, Tres Borrachos will be making his second start of the year after finishing third in a seven furlong allowance June 10 at Hollywood Park. The 6-year-old Ecton Park gelding out of the Peteski mare Pete’s Fancy has won three of 30 and earned $640,257.

From inside out, the field for the $200,000 San Diego Handicap: Kevlar Kid, Chantal Sutherland rides, 116 pounds; Don Tito, Alonso Quinonez, 115; Oilisblackgold, Victor Espinoza, 112; Spurrier, Joel Rosario, 117; Tres Borrachos, Rafael Bejarano, 116; Golden Itiz, Tyler Baze, 118; Aggie Engineer, Joe Talamo, 120 and Uh Oh Bango, Garrett Gomez, 117.

Post time Saturday at Del Mar is 2 p.m. The San Diego is the eighth of 10 races. Track gates at Hollywood Park for simulcasts will open at 10:30 a.m.
