INGLEWOOD, Calif. (August 23, 2010)—Hollywood Park stakes winners had a successful weekend at both Del Mar and Saratoga.

Clearly the front runner to be the champion 3-year-old filly, Blind Luck became the first winner of the Hollywood Starlet to capture the Alabama Stakes, winning the Grade 1 by a neck.

The victory was the ninth – five coming in Grade 1’s – in 13 starts for Blind Luck, who is owned by Peter Abruzzo, John Carver, Mark DeDomenico and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. The daughter of Pollard’s Vision was able to rally from last in the 1 ¼ mile race despite the extremely slow pace.

If Blind Luck is at the head of her class, Evening Jewel is certainly a close second. The talented California bred, who won the Honeymoon Handicap in her turf debut on May 31 at Hollywood Park, remained undefeated on the surface Saturday.

Owned by the Braly Family Trust and trained by Jim Cassidy, the Northern Afleet filly defeated American Oaks winner Harmonious by a half-length in the $300,000 Del Mar Oaks. The Grade I victory was her third in a row on grass. Overall, Evening Jewel, who finished a nose behind Blind Luck in the Kentucky Oaks on April 30, has won six of 12 and earned $876,943.

Victor Espinoza was aboard Evening Jewel and he was also the rider for Sweet August Moon, who made it consecutive graded stakes wins Sunday. Trained by Brian Koriner for Peter and Evelyn Parrella’s Legacy Ranch and Team MacPherson, Sweet August Moon defeated Alpha Kitten by three-quarters of a length in the $147,000 Rancho Bernardo Handicap at Del Mar. This race came five weeks after the 5-year-old Malibu Moon mare had won the A Gleam Handicap at Hollywood Park.

A winner of seven of 17 with a bankroll of $426,396, Sweet August Moon earned a berth in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint on Nov. 5 at Churchill Downs by virtue of her Rancho Bernardo score.
