INGLEWOOD, Calif. (March 2, 2012)—Jockeys Garrett Gomez and Alex Solis are among the finalists for the National Musuem of Racing’s Hall of Fame in 2012.

Gomez, who is on the mend from a broken heel suffered early in the year in a walking ring mishap at Santa Anita, and Solis, who has won more than 4,900 races, are joined by fellow riders Calvin Borel and John Velazquez. All four jockeys were also finalists in 2011.

The newcomers to the ballot are Roger Attfield, who has been named Canada’s outstanding trainer a record eight times while conditioning three winners (Izvestia, With Approval and Peteski) of the Canadian Triple Crown, and thoroughbreds Ashado, Ghostzapper, Housebuster and Xtra Heat. The other finalist is the late trainer Robert Wheeler, also a holdover from 2011.

Trained by the late Bobby Frankel for owner-breeder Frank Stronach, Ghostzapper earned his maiden victory at Hollywood Park by nine lengths in his debut Nov. 16, 2002. A winner of nine of 11 lifetime, the son of Awesome Again was champion older male and Horse of the Year in 2004, which included a victory in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Lone Star Park in stakes record time.

The four candidates with the highest vote totals will be elected. The results of the voting will be announced April 23. The induction ceremony will take place Aug. 10 at the Fasig-Tipton Sales Pavilion in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
