Dixieland Blues Ends Losing Streak In Friday Feature

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (May 31, 2013)—Dixieland Blues ended a six-race losing streak, rallying strongly to win the $55,250 feature Friday at Betfair Hollywood Park.

The beaten favorite in four of those defeats, the 5-year-old gelded son of In Excess got the job done as the 2-1 choice, defeating Mr. Ornery and eight other horses either bred or sired in California.

Ridden with patience by jockey Garrett Gomez, Dixieland Blues swung to the outside entering the stretch and was up in time, winning by a half-length over stablemate Mr. Ornery, a 9-1 shot who was making his first start of 2013.

Out of the Dixieland Band mare Southern Charm, Dixieland Blues won for the second time in 10 starts and pushed his earnings to $109,064.

Trained by Marty Jones – who also conditions the runner-up – for owner-breeders Harris Farms, Inc., Don Valpredo and John Nicoletti, the bay completed the six furlongs on turf in 1:09.54. He paid $6, $3.40 and $2.80.

Mr. Ornery, who broke his maiden at first asking at nearly 41-1 at the same trip last June 9, returned $10 and $5.20. He finished a half-length in front of 3-1 second choice and recent maiden winner U’narack. The show price on U’narack was $2.60.

Racing resumes Saturday. Post time is 1 p.m.

The fourth $150,000-guaranteed Pick Six Saturday –Presented by Television Games Network (TVG) – of the Spring/Summer meet will begin in the fourth race.

If the Pick Six pool exceeds $200,000 on any of the remaining selected Saturdays – which also include June 15, June 22, June 29, July 6 and July 13 – there will be $1 Happy Hour food and drink specials offered at Whittingham’s Pub and the Betfair Players’ Lounge.

A bonus – a 2013 Toyota Prius courtesy of Toyota of Orange – will also be given to a single winning ticket – provided it was purchased either at Betfair Hollywood Park or through TVG.

The main event on the nine race program is the $150,000 Californian, a Grade II for older horses at 1 1/8 miles on Cushion Track. Liaison, winner of the Grade II Mervyun LeRoy Handicap earlier in the Spring/Summer meet, heads the field.
