Defending Champ Jeranimo Among Shoe Mile Noms; Sahara Sky, Comma To The Top Head Triple Bend

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (June 21, 2013)—Defending champion Jeranimo, multiple Grade II winner Obviously and 2012 Citation Handicap hero Data Link are among 12 nominees to the $300,000 Shoemaker Mile.

A Grade I on turf, the Shoemaker Mile will be run for the 70th time Saturday, June 29 at Betfair Hollywood Park.

Named in honor of the legendary jockey who won 2,416 races – including 280 stakes – at Hollywood Park, the Shoemaker Mile is a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In’’ event.

The BC nominated winner of the race will earn fees-waived entry into the Breeders’ Cup Mile, which will be run Nov. 2 at Santa Anita.

Owned by B.J. Wright and Robert V. LaPenta and trained by Mike Pender, Jeranimo rallied from last to win the 2012 Shoemaker Mile (video), giving the son of Congaree his third victory over the Betfair Hollywood Park grass.

A 7-year-old out of the Jeblar mare Jera, Jeramino has won nine of 33 and earned $1,202,864.

Trained by Mike Mitchell for owners Anthony Fanticola and Joe Scardino, Obviously wired five opponents by 2 ½ lengths in his return to Betfair Hollywood Park in the Grade II American Handicap May 25.

The victory was the seventh in 14 outings for the 5-year-old gelded son of Choisir and pushed his earnings to $668,361.

Owned by breeder Stuart S. Janney III and trained by Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey, Data Link won the Citation by 2 ¼ lengths last Nov. 23 in his initial start in California. The 5-year-old War Front horse out of the Known Fact mare Database is 8-for-17 with a bankroll of $825,835.

The rest of the Shoemaker Mile nominees: All Squared Away, Barocci, Fed Biz, Lucayan, Silver Max, Summer Hit, Tigah, Wilkinson and Za Approval.

The Shoemaker Mile is the more lucrative of two Grade I races that will be offered June 29.

The $250,000 Triple Bend Handicap, which is at seven furlongs over Cushion Track, had 15 nominations, including defending champion Camp Victory, multiple-stakes winner Comma to the Top, 2012 Malibu Stakes winner Jimmy Creed, 2009 Hollywood Gold Cup upsetter Rail Trip and Sahara Sky, who won the Grade I Metropolitan Handicap May 27 at Belmont Park.

The Triple Bend is also a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In’’ race. The BC nominated winner of the `Bend will earn fees-waived entry into the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, which will be run Nov. 2 at Santa Anita.

Entries for the Shoemaker Mile and the Triple Bend Handicap will be taken Wednesday, June 26.
