INGLEWOOD, Calif. (April 4, 2012)—Creative Cause, who earned his maiden win in his career debut last July 16 at Betfair Hollywood Park, drew the rail for the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby Saturday at Santa Anita.
A Grade I for 3-year-olds at 1 1/8 miles, the Derby is the sixth of 11 races. Post time is 12 Noon. Track gates at Betfair Hollywood Park will open at 10:15 a.m. for simulcasts.
Owned by Heinz Steinmann and trained by Mike Harrington, Creative Cause has gone on to win three graded events since his 4 ¾ length win over Cushion Track going five furlongs on the next-to-last day of the 2011 Spring/Summer meet.
Prior to his victory in the Grade II San Felipe March 10 at Santa Anita, the son of Giant’s Causeway had won a pair of Grade I’s – the Best Pal last summer at Del Mar and the Norfolk in the fall at Santa Anita.
Never worse than third in his seven race career, Creative Cause has earned $719,000.
Drawn directly outside of Creative Cause is 2011 CashCall Futurity winner Liaison. A son of Indian Charlie owned by Arnold Zetcher, Liaison is one of three entered in the Derby by Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert. His other two entrants are Paynter, a first out winner by 4 ¼ lengths Feb. 18 and Blueskiesnrainbows.
