INGLEWOOD, Calif. (May 16, 2010)-Made For Magic, who was claimed for $16,000 last Aug. 21 at Golden Gate Fields, became a graded stakes winner with a 9-1 upset in the $150,000 Milady Handicap on Sunday at Hollywood Park.

Trained by A C Avila for owners L-Bo Racing and Michael Lamb, the 5-year-old daughter of Cape Canaveral out of the Exploit mare Only Seventeen edged favored Wynning Ride for her most significant victory.

After sitting behind the moderate pace set by Dance To My Tune, Made For Magic rallied outside in the stretch under Omar Berrio. She gained the lead with a little less than an eighth of a mile to run, ultimately prevailing by a half-length over the 13-10 choice.

The victory was the second in seven 2010 starts for Made For Magic, who was bred in Kentucky by Hyperion Bloodstock. Overall, she has won eight of 33 and has earned $297,994. She has banked $208,776 for her current connections.

Campaigned in Washington, Vancouver, British Columbia and Northern California for the first 19 starts of her career, Made For Magic has won four times in 14 races since joining the Avila stable.

Prior to the Milady, a Grade II which was run for the 59th time on Sunday, Made For Magic’s wins for Avila had come against $20,000 rivals at Del Mar five days after she was claimed, in the ungraded Las Madrinas Handicap last Sept. 26 at Fairplex Park and in an optional claimer on April 2 at Santa Anita.

Covering the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.48. Made For Magic returned $21.60, $7,40 and $4.20. Wynning Ride, who was trying to give the combination of trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Martin Garcia another stakes score after their Preakness win with Lookin At Lucky on Saturday at Pimlico, paid $3.20 and $2.20. She finished a half-length in front of Third Dawn, the 5-2 second choice. The show price on Third Dawn, who was seeking to give Joel Rosario his third win of the day, was $2.60.

“She’s a very good work horse, so I told Omar pretend that you are working her,’’ said Avila after his second stakes win of the meet in tandem with Berrio. The pair combined with 10-1 shot Fantasy Free in the $150,000 Tiznow on California Gold Rush Day on April 24. “Don’t send her, just let her sit, the way she likes to run. “Don’t ride somebody else’s horse.’’

Berrio, whose most recent graded stakes win at Hollywood Park had come for Avila with River Savage in the 2007 Hawthorne Handicap, felt Made For Magic would run well on Sunday after a strong 1:00 work eight days earlier at Santa Anita.

“She was just galloping,’’ he said. “I had her too close to the lead the last time I rode her, but today she was in behind horses and she finished strong.’’

Garcia, who rode Wynning Ride for the first time when she made a successful 4-year-old debut in a 6 ½ furlong allowance at Santa Anita on April 16, believes the daughter of Candy Ride can improve.

“I don’t know what happened, but she tried really, really hard,’’ said Garcia. “She did everything she could but maybe she was a little short. She just had (one sprint). Maybe she will be better next time.’’

The only other jockey with more than one win Sunday was Mike Smith. He won with favorites Banner Lodge in the fourth and Harmonious in the sixth.

For the second consecutive day, the biggest surprise was provided by Hall of Fame trainer Jack Van Berg.

After 34-1 shot Fortunate Victory triggered a Hollywood Park record $78,703.90 trifecta on Saturday, Van Berg struck again in Sunday’s ninth race.

Court Hero, a 5-year-old gelded son of Decarchy making his first start for owner-breeders Kappy Appleby and Millie Howlett, won narrowly over favored Big Wags, returning $44.80. Tyler Baze was aboard for the upset, which helped lead to a $167,780.60 payoff for three perfect tickets in the Pick Six.

The fifth week of Hollywood Park’s spring-summer meet will begin on Wednesday. Post time is 1 p.m.
