INGLEWOOD, Calif. (July 19, 2012)—Acclamation, a three-time winner of the Grade I Charles Whittingham Memorial Handicap at Betfair Hollywood Park, will make his second start of 2012 in the $300,000 Eddie Read Saturday at Del Mar.

A Grade I at 1 1/8 miles on turf, the Eddie Read is the third of 10 races. Post time at Del Mar is 2 p.m. Track gates at Betfair Hollywood Park will open at 10 a.m. for simulcasts.

Owned by breeders Bud and Judy Johnston and Peter and Mary Hilvers and trained by Don Warren, Acclamation is the defending champion in the Read. If he wins again Saturday, he would become the fourth two time winner of the race, joining Special Ring (2003-2004), Fastness (1995-1996) and Wickerr (1981-1982).

The 2011 champion older male, Acclamation, a 6-year-old son of Unusual Heat, won the Whittingham by one length June 9 in his first race since taking the Grade II Clement L. Hirsch last Oct. 2 at Santa Anita.

The victory was the sixth in a row for the California bred. He’s won 10 of 29 lifetime and earned $1,778,048.

Patrick Valenzuela, who is 3-for-3 with Acclamation, will again have the mount as the bay seeks his third win in his sixth start over the Del Mar grass.

His four opponents include Whittingham runner-up Slim Shadey, who is back in two weeks after finishing fifth as the 2-1 favorite in the Grade I United Nations at Monmouth Park.

From inside out, the field for the 39th Eddie Read: Hog’s Hollow, Rafael Bejarano rides, 119 pounds; Interaction, Brice Blanc, 119; Acclamation, Patrick Valenzuela, 123; Casino Host, Joe Talamo, 121 and Slim Shadey, Garrett Gomez, 122.
