A Gleam Winner Stretches Out In Clement L. Hirsch

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (August 2, 2012)—Switch, who ended an eight-race losing streak in the $200,000 A Gleam Handicap July 14 at Betfair Hollywood Park, will try to go back-to-back in the $300,000 Clement L. Hirsch Saturday at Del Mar.

A Grade I for older fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles over Polytrack, the Hirsch is the eighth of 10 races. Post time Saturday is 2 p.m. Track gates at Betfair Hollywood Park will open at 10 a.m. for simulcasts.

Owned by Lee and Susan Searing’s C R K Stable and trained by John Sadler, Switch’s 1 ¾ length victory in the Grade II A Gleam was her first since she took the Grade I Santa Monica Jan. 30, 2011 at Santa Anita.

Third as the 7-10 favorite in the 2011 Hirsch, Switch will be seeking her seventh lifetime win. The 5-year-old daughter of Quiet American and the Nicholas mare Antoniette has earned $1,362,562 in 21 starts.

The Hirsch will also feature the synthetic track debut of Star Billing, the upset winner of the Grade I Matriarch last Nov. 25 at Betfair Hollywood Park.

Owned by breeder George Krikorian and trained by John Shirreffs, who won this race three times in a row (2008-2010) with Zenyatta, Star Billing disappointed in her first race of the year.

The 4-year-old Dynaformer filly out of the Thunder Gulch mare Topliner was last as the 8-5 favorite in the Redondo Beach Stakes June 10 at Betfair Hollywood Park. She’s won three of eight in her career and banked $355,067.
