JULIEN LEPAROUX, DHAAMER, Winner: “There was a lot of pressure before this race. All the family is here. But he’s a nice horse and won easily today. I couldn’t have asked for a better present for my birthday (Leparoux turned 29 today). In a four-horse field, everything went pretty much as planned. We knew there was not going to be pace. We thought before the race (Juniper Pass) was the one to beat. I just followed that one and when I asked him, he came very nice for me. He was just much the best today.
MIKE MITCHELL, DHAAMER, Winner: “He might have one start at Del Mar, we’ll just have to figure out which one. That’s kind of in our focus but we want to have a Breeders’ Cup Marathon horse on the dirt. He just barely got beat in the (Grade III) Tokyo City (in his U.S. debut March 24). Julien (Leparoux) has such a great set of hands. Way before he met my daughter I was riding him on horses. I’ve always thought he was a great rider.”
On his health: “Getting stronger. A few more treatments and then I’m good to go. Everything has gone really well. Hopefully I’ll be at Del Mar midway through. I’m going to do what the doctors tell me, but that’s my plan.”
