RAFAEL BEJARANO, LIBERIAN FREIGHTER, Winner: “I’m going to be a week away (from Hollywood Park), so I’m trying to do my best. Any jockey could have won with these horses. When you have the best horse you can do anything you want. The last five races I won, I had the best horse in each race. On the turn I looked over and saw a horse get through inside, but it really didn’t bother me because I knew I had so much horse left. I worked him the last few times and even though he’s been running on the turf, I knew he could run on the dirt, too.”
MICHAEL BAZE, STAR NICHOLAS, Second: “I was going to wait and go outside, but the rail was open and he wanted to go through. He was just second best today. He ran great.”
NEIL DRYSDALE, LIBERIAN FREIGHTER, Winner: “I thought he got an excellent ride and he finished well. He hasn’t run on the synthetic since he broke his maiden, I don’t think, but he looked quite happy out there. He enjoyed the track today. Rafael (Bejarano) has ridden the horse a few times and he runs very well for him.”
NOTE: The win was the fifth of the day for Rafael Bejarano — one short of the Hollywood Park record of six wins set by Bill Shoemaker on June 20, 1953, and later matched by Laffit Pincay Jr. (April 27, 1968), Shoemaker (June 24, 1970) and Kent Desormeaux (July 3, 1992).
