Jockey Quotes

CHANTAL SUTHERLAND, LOGICAL SINGLE, Winner: “She was out there by herself and was looking around a little bit, but if anything she kind of went in because she switched to her left lead. I saw him (Talamo) close to the wire, but had already switched my lead inward. Sometimes it goes 50-50 and sometimes it goes their way and I know Joe’s got to try (to claim foul). I was lucky today and I’m very grateful.”

JOE TALAMO, LADY RAILRIDER, Second: “I think it cost me the race because I really had a lot of momentum going to that other horse and I really thought I was going to get up by a head or a short nose. She did come out pretty good if you look at the head-on. My filly kind of shied away when she saw that filly coming out and it might have cost her. What can you do?”

Trainer Quotes

DEAN PEDERSON, LOGICAL SINGLE, Winner: “We knew it wasn’t going to do us any good to try and hook that filly (Jax El) early. My concern is that in her only bad race the jockey took too much hold on her and got into a wrestling match. Nobody wins at that. Chantal got to ride her the one time at Santa Anita (third in the Irish O’Brien March 19) and got to know her and I think that was beneficial. She ran a huge race for us that day. It kind of gave us confidence that she at least belonged. We took her back up north and she ran dynamite off that race at Santa Anita (winning a six furlong allowance April 10 at Golden Gate). We freshened her up and bypassed the Gold Rush because I thought that was coming back too quick. Watching the replay it looked like Joe (Talamo) never quit riding. Joe did what he thought he had to do (claim foul), but I didn’t see him quit riding and that gave me confidence that maybe they’d leave us up.”
