Jockey Quotes

MIKE SMITH, FREE FLYING SOUL, Winner: “She’s some sprinter, she really is. She’s so professional, she just goes out and does it every time. Even when she doesn’t win, she’s right there. She ran a big race in Kentucky last time. I might have pulled the trigger a little soon. I was worried about the closers and I was trying to get away from them. She still ran dynamite and she came back and redeemed herself.”

Trainer Quotes

KAREN HEADLEY (ASSISTANT TRAINER) “She’s peaked for the last year. She’s really grown up. She ran a great race in Kentucky and came back within a month here and didn’t bounce, didn’t do anything. She’s just a really good mare. She tries every time. Let’s see how she comes out of the race before deciding on what’s next.”

NOTES: The win was the fifth stakes victory of the meet for Smith, one less than leader Rafael Bejarano…It was also the second victory in a row in the Desert Stormer for the Hall of Fame jockey and his third in six years. Smith won aboard Coco Belle for owners Jerry and Ann Moss and trainer John Sadler in 2009…The Mosses and Sadler finished second with Alpha Kitten Saturday….Smith’s other win in the race named to honor the 1995 Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner was with Puxa Saco in 2005.
