Jockey Quotes

DAVID FLORES, MRS KIPLING, Winner: “First time in this country she hung a little bit the last sixteenth. Today they were really sprinting up front. I let her break on her own and she settled into a nice stride. All I was trying to do was to keep her in the clear. At the three-eighths I chirped to her once and she was really relaxed. By the time we hit the stretch she changed leads and she was gone.”

MARTIN GARCIA, CANDILEJAS, Second: “I tried to get my filly to relax behind the speed. She’s usually on the lead, but she relaxed real good today. When I asked her to run she responded but we just got beat by a nice filly.”

Trainer Quotes

NEIL DRYSDALE, MRS KIPLING, Winner: “She had a lovely trip and a lovely ride. It was a mile today and she relaxed very well. I know there was a strong pace in front of her, but she switched off to wherever he (David Flores) wanted her. I don’t see any problem with her going nine (furlongs) and if she goes nine, well then we will go ten. We’ll just go one step at a time.”

NOTES: Trainer Neil Drysdale was referring to the $150,000 Honeymoon Handicap (1 1/8 miles) on May 31 and the $750,000 American Oaks (1 ¼ miles) on July 5.
