Jockey Quotes

JOEL ROSARIO, LUCAYAN, Winner: “He was traveling well, but I had to keep after him. He is one paced and can get a little lazy, but I knew that if I kept after him we would eventually catch (Temeraine) and we got it done.”

GARY STEVENS, TEMERAINE, Second: “The pace kind of killed us. We did all the dirty work, but it wasn’t enough dirty work. Joel was able to sit back there and outkick us.”

MIKE SMITH, SEGWAY, Third: “He was just really green. First time out here and he was getting out really bad. He was looking at everything in the infield, but that’s the way it goes.”

Trainer Quotes

NEIL DRYSDALE, LUCAYAN, Winner: “The key to this guy is getting him to relax and (Rosario) did a lovely job of relaxing him. He’s had an unlucky year. At Del Mar (Grade II Del Mar Handicap Aug. 24), he tried to come up the middle and got stopped. In the (Grade II) John Henry (Turf Championship Sept. 29 at Santa Anita) he also got stuck. And then in Canada (Grade I Canadian International Oct. 27 at Woodbine), it was just a bog and he couldn’t handle it. We felt that it was just too fast for him in this country to go a mile and he really needed nine or 10 (furlongs). But there weren’t any races at those distances, which kind of pushed us into running him longer. My heart was going a little boom, boom, boom because they were going so slow, but this horse is talented.”

TOM PROCTOR, TEMERAINE, Second: “He ran well. (Stevens) was left in kind of no man’s land. He had to either try to put some pressure or let the other one go. Damned if you do or damned if you don’t. I would have loved to win the Sunset and Turf Cup, but I guess there are no fairy tale endings in horse racing.”

RICHARD MANDELLA, SEGWAY, Third: “He ran nice. He’s come a long way from his non-winners of two. He’s had a few injuries in his life that set him back, so we’re playing a little catch up with him. Nothing real serious, just a couple of minor things. Going a mile and one-half, experience helps a little, and he’s lacking that. With it, he’ll probably end up a pretty good little horse.’’

Notes: The win was the first for Drysdale in the Turf Cup and his 83rd stakes win at Hollywood Park, leaving him seventh on the all-time list behind fellow Hall of Famers D. Wayne Lukas, Bob Baffert, Richard Mandella, Ron McAnally, Bobby Frankel and Charlie Whittingham, the runaway leader with 222….Proctor won the 2013 Sunset with Marketing Mix.
