Jockey Quotes

RAJIV MARAGH, SANAGAS, Winner: “It was pretty straightforward. My horse got into a nice flow right away and was just pulling me around the track. I was always in a good position without having to ask him. He made my job very easy. (Ashtar) moved on my outside and that kind of triggered him to go. It was a little earlier than I wanted initially, but he really wanted to go and I didn’t want to dishearten him. He always runs big and we’ve always had high hopes for him.”

GARRETT GOMEZ, BOURBON BAY, Second: “He traveled well and he ran well. The winner cut on the turn and I just couldn’t keep pace. He kept trying and kept digging. I got shuffled a little on the backstretch, but I liked where I was. I was straight in behind the horses I thought I had to beat, I just couldn’t quicken with the winner.

Trainer Quotes

ALICE CLAPHAM (Assistant Trainer), SANAGAS, Winner: “The plane trip was uneventful…New York into Los Angeles. There wasn’t a Tex Sutton charter flight so we came on the Fed Ex flight with all the packages. It’s a big cargo plane but they loaded him last and took him off first. His last race was supposed to be at a mile and one-half on turf (Grade III Sycamore Oct. 20 at Keeneland) but they had to lengthen it (to a mile and five-eighths) when they took it off the turf. He moved a little early today, but Rajiv said he dragged him to the lead. It worked out great. He’ll ship back to Fair Hill (Nov. 27).”

NEIL DRYSDALE, BOURBON BAY, Second: “He ran really well. He got boxed in a bit. The other horse got the jump on us and away he went.”

SIMON CALLAGHAN, FALCON ROCK, Third: “He ran well. He always picks up some place money. The best horse won but he had a good trip and ran well.”

Notes: The Grade I was the first stakes victory at Hollywood Park for Maragh, 26…The New York-based rider was second with Forever Together in last year’s Gamely and was runner-up aboard Wasted Tears in the 2010 Matriarch.
