Jockey Quotes

VICTOR ESPINOZA, VICTOR’S CRY, Winner: “My horse was nice and relaxed, way, way back. Right before the three-eighths I just slightly let him move up, little by little. There were a lot of horses in front of me and I just wanted to make sure I’d have a great trip. I didn’t want to get stopped under any circumstances because he’s such a big horse. This was the first time I was on him, so I didn’t know how he was going to react. Turning for home I was just waiting. There was just enough room to get through and when I turned him loose, he had a really strong kick. I just had to show him the whip, I didn’t really have to hit him. He won easily. I was very impressed.”

JOEL ROSARIO, COURT VISION, Fourth: “I tried to ask him early because he just wanted to drop back. It took him a lot of time to get in the race. I had to try and make my move earlier than I wanted but he really didn’t want to go. I had to keep asking and asking and asking and he finally picked it up just a little bit. He’s a better horse than he showed today. He really finished well but he just couldn’t get comfortable the first part.”

Trainer Quotes

EOIN HARTY, VICTOR’S CRY, Winner: “You could see Victor (Espinoza) wanted to go outside, and he couldn’t go outside so then he dropped back in. Victor got on the horse because he’s a very good rider and (Corey) Nakatani opted to go somewhere else (ninth place finisher Ryehill Dreamer). I was just glad to get him. He doesn’t ride for me very often, but I’ve had a lot of luck with him in the past. He (Victor’s Cry) likes this course, but I think if he gets the right ride, he likes any course. In the race at Del Mar, he got outrun by The Usual Q.T., and he’s probably our best American turf horse. I see no reason he won’t come back next year. He’s been very sound and there’s no reason not to. Victor on Victor. I thought it was karma.”

HUMBERTO ASCANIO, PROUDINSKY, Second: “I really didn’t have enough to to get him cranked up the way I wanted. I wish I could have gotten a race into him. But I’m proud of my horse, he ran well. He’s been gone for 11 months and he got a little tired at the end. He’ll be ready next time.”
