h4.Jockey Quotes

JOE TALAMO, TALE OF A CHAMPION, Winner: “We really had a great trip. He’s really coming into himself. I rode him for the first time (Feb. 23) at Santa Anita. He really impressed me when he won last time. The race set up perfectly for him today. There wasn’t much pace and he just sat right behind and at the quarter pole was able to come off the rail. He fought off that outside horse (All Squared Away). My horse felt his presence at the eighth pole and kept digging in.”

COREY NAKATANI, ALL SQUARED AWAY, Second: “Coming out on the track something scared him and he got all worked up. I was just trying to stay on him at that point. After that he warmed up kind of docile. I don’t think he was at his best after that happened. It seemed like he was OK in the warmup. In the race, he usually tries to pull a little and go. He never really picked it up for me. But he ran a good race considering they were going slow early.”

TYLER BAZE, LUCKY PRIMO, Third: I had everything the way I wanted it. He just got a little tired. For his first start in eight months, I thought he ran great.”

Trainer Quotes

KRISTIN MULHALL, TALE OF A CHAMPION, Winner: “I think we’ve misplaced this horse in the past and he hasn’t had the best trips. He feels like he wants to run two miles when he’s galloping. I told the owner about five races ago I’d like to see him go a mile and one-half. We were trying to build his confidence up at Santa Anita. He’s been training really well. We’ve been working him short trying to get him to relax, but he’s been galloping out strong. We might come back in the (Grade III, $100,000) Sunset Handicap (July 14).”

PETER MILLER, ALL SQUARED AWAY, Second: “He spooked from the pony coming onto the track, but he really didn’t have an excuse.”

JOSHUA LITT, LUCKY PRIMO, Third: “I was happy with his race. He got graded stakes placed. He got a little tired, which you have to expect going this distance for the first time.”
