Jockey Quotes

GARRETT GOMEZ, COMPARI, Winner: “Marty (Jones) told me I could take him back if I wanted, but I said you know if he breaks well and he shows me enough gas leaving there, then I’ll go ahead and see if I can get over. Rafael (Bejarano) was just starting to sit with Triumphant Flight and that’s when I decided to go. I got over and was able to control the race. I might have caught him flat-footed a bit.”

RAFAEL BEJARANO, TRIUMPHANT FLIGHT, Second: “I tried to send him but the other horse (Compari) showed a lot of speed and closed me off right away. He was very close to me on the first turn. I almost clipped his heels. After that he was comfortable and I really thought I was going to win the race. My horse was still running, but the other horse was best.”

Trainer Quotes

MARTIN F. JONES, COMPARI, Winner: “We’ve always been pretty high on this horse. I had him here last year getting him ready as a 2-year-old and he was working right along with Lucky Primo. We knew the distance wasn’t a problem and we knew the surface wasn’t a problem; he’s always worked good on this track. The timing was right and everything just worked out. I was much more concerned about the pace than anything else. Once I saw him get to the front I felt pretty good about it. The horse that was chasing him was a really good, hard-trying horse, but his best chance to win was how Garrett (Gomez) rode him. When I work him in company he always pulls real hard until he gets to the front and then he just throws his ears up and relaxes. We’re trying to get Lucky Primo ready for the Swaps and he (Compari) is right there in the mix too.”
