Jockey Quotes

VICTOR ESPINOZA, NAHEM, Winner: “I thought I was going to get there but I wasn’t expecting the outside horse (Woodmans Luck) to come running. I knew the favorites were starting to get tired the last sixteenth and I knew I had them. About 10 yards before the wire my horse switched to the wrong lead and I thought at that moment it might have cost me the race. This horse is not that easy to ride. He’s still learning and a little bit immature.”

DAVID FLORES, WOODMANS LUCK, Second: “It’s just one of those things, the other horse got the bob. The last few jumps was pretty close. I was hoping maybe we finished in a dead heat.’’

Trainer Quotes

PADDY GALLAGHER, NAHEM, Winner: “It’s nice to win one like that. I was lucky enough to win this race a few years ago, as well. I was very glad to win one for the (co-owners and breeders Mike and Corey) Wellmans. It looked like he was holding on, but when that other horse came up outside him he really responded. He ducked in a little in the stretch. He’s a little horse with a mind of his own. Grass and distance are going to be his future.”

Notes: The win was Espinoza’s third in the Snow Chief, tying him with Laffit Pincay, Jr. for most in the race. Espinoza had won previously with Vote Of Honesty (1997) and Da Stoops (2006)…Drink At Buster’s, who finished last, was vanned off after the race with an apparent injury to his left foreleg.
