OMAR BERRIO, MADE FOR MAGIC, Winner: “The last time I worked her, she went 59 and she was just galloping. He told me to ride her just like you do in the morning and everything went perfect. Last time I had her too close to the lead, but today she was in behind horses and she finished strong.
MARTIN GARCIA, WYNNING RIDE, Second: “I don’t know what happened, but she tried really, really hard. She did everything that she could but maybe she was a little bit short. She just had one 6 furlong race. Maybe she’ll be better next time.”
A.C. AVILA, MADE FOR MAGIC, Winner: “She’s a very good work horse, so I told Omar pretend that you’re working her. Don’t send her, just let her sit, the way she likes to run. Don’t ride somebody else’s horse. In her last work, I told Omar to go 1:01 and she worked in hand 46 and 59 and kept going out in 1:11. She came back breathing like she didn’t do anything. I think she bounced a little bit last time off that big win. But you have a program and you have to follow it. (When asked about the $250,000 Vanity on June 13), “We applaud our mare today but I don’t want to go up against Zenyatta.”
Notes: Made For Magic has won four of 14 since being claimed by Avila and has earned $208,770…The stakes win was the second of the meet for the Avila-Berrio combination. They won the $150,000 Tiznow Stakes with 10-1 shot Fantasy Free on April 24 (California Gold Rush Day)…It was the first graded stakes victory for Avila and Berrio at Hollywood Park since they teamed with River Savage in the Hawthorne Handicap on May 6, 2007….Zenyatta, who has won all 16 of her starts, including the Milady in both 2008-2009, is considered likely to make her next appearance in the Vanity.
