Jockey Quotes

CHRISTIAN SANTIAGO REYES, ACCLAMATION, Winner: (Through an interpreter)“I wasn’t planning to go to the front, but everybody took back so I just inherited the lead. I’ve never been on him before so I wasn’t sure what to expect. At the half-mile pole I still hadn’t let him run, he was just galloping along.”

JOE TALAMO, FALCON ROCK, Second: “I tell you what, I had an absolute perfect trip. I was right in the second pack, right behind the four horse (Alphie’s Bet) and that horse was getting out, so I moved up a spot and basically just stayed on the rail. The winner had such easy fractions.”

RAFAEL BEJARANO, SCINTILLO, Fourth: “He was in perfect position and was doing good. When we straightened out he started lugging in real bad. For some reason, he didn’t feel right behind. I was trying to protect him after the wire.”

Trainer Quotes

DON WARREN, ACCLAMATION, Winner: “We were sure hoping he would run like this at this distance. He’s out of a Silveyville mare. Silveyville could run all day on the front end. We felt that when the time was right and he got a little more maturity, we’re going to make him a mile and one-quarter horse. You have to work up to it. He’s actually a young 4-year-old. We’re lucky if he’s actually even four years old. When he came by the wire the first time, he looked beautiful, like he was in a common gallop. I was basically thinking to myself, the half in 50, the half in 50, three quarters in 14 or 15. The horse will do the rest if he can.”

NOTES— The 7 ½ length margin of victory was the largest in the history of the Murray. The previous record was seven lengths by Bienamado in 2000…Acclamation was the first California bred winner…The win was the first in a graded stakes for Santiago Reyes, 20, who will ride as an apprentice for the final time on Sunday. Reyes’ only other stakes win came with Bench The Judge in the $100,000 Bob Benoit California Cup Juvenile last Oct. 3 at Oak Tree.
