RAFAEL BEJARANO, SARAH’S SECRET, Winner: “She was a little nervous in the paddock so in the post parade I tried to keep her quiet…jogging and walking. It was her first time going a distance so I just let her break and when I saw (Star Billing) tried to slow the pace, I just took the lead on the first turn. She was going slow and I was getting ready to move when the other horse moved, but she never moved so I was waiting until the stretch. She showed me a big kick in the stretch. I wasn’t even whipping her.”
TYLER BAZE, STAR BILLING, Second: “She ran good. She was a little rank to start with. We went so slow and (trainer) John (Shirreffs) wanted me to follow a horse. I wanted them to be going a little faster, but we were crawling. She was trying.”
KATHY WALSH, SARAH’S SECRET, Winner: “Mr. and Mrs. Al Kirkwood bought a major interest in this filly two weeks ago, but they were unable to attend today. We would have liked to be able to cover her up, but there just wasn’t any speed at all. The race was paceless and Rafael (Bejarano) just had to use his own judgment. It was one of those things were he did a great job in rating her and getting her to settle. She just needed to grow up last year and we gave her the time. Little things kept setting her back. I would have liked to have her go two turns sooner. We’ll see what’s next. I don’t ever press on any horses until they show me they’re ready to go back. If we need more time, we’ll take more time. I think she’s quite good, I really do. In the morning when we train her, she gallops a mile and three-quarters and she’s stronger at the finish than she is at the start.”
JOHN SHIRREFFS, STAR BILLING, Second: “She was a little unsettled the first part. Given the fractions I thought she ran very well. I expected there to be some sort of pace, but there wasn’t. But that was her third race and she’s still got a lot to learn. We’ll look at the ($250,000) American Oaks (July 16) next.”
