Jockey Quotes

JOE TALAMO, SCHERER MAGIC, Winner: “We had a perfect trip, I was able to tuck in around the turn, save a little ground and came out turning for home and blew them down. It was a great trip. John Sadler has done a great job getting him ready you know, he had a nice series of long workouts before this race, he was ready to go.”

MARTIN PEDROZA, CARSON´S CROWN, Second: “I was very pleased with my colt´s effort. I hope I made the right move now. Now I have to watch (trainer Jerry) Hollendorfer´s horse (Via Villaggio) run in the ($400,000, Grade II Delaware Oaks at Delaware Park). I had the choice to stay here or go there, but I like this horse a lot and decided to ride here.”

EDWIN MALDONADO, AMARISH, Sixth: “The trip was good. He broke sharp. I didn´t want to choke him and he still wanted to take the lead. I kind of let him run his race. He didn´t mind the company on the outside. Something went wrong. We´ll see what happens after he gets back to the barn.”

Trainer Quotes

JOHN SADLER, SCHERER MAGIC, Winner and CARSON’S CROWN, Second: He (Scherer Magic) had a bunch of good works and (co-owner) Gary (Barber) is kind of a riverboat gambler. He picked him out and I kind of did my homework on him. I thought he was racy and I had another Doneraile Court a few years ago named Noble Court. I liked the works on him and I liked the way he looked when he came over. You have to have some guts to claim an Iowa bred. You have to be lucky, too. We won a (six way) shake that day. Before we even claimed him, we were looking at the Iowa bred stakes schedule. I might want to make him eligible to the Breeders’ Juvenile Sprint (Nov. 3 at Santa Anita). It closes tomorrow and it’s a big price reduction if you nominate him early. I thought my other horse (Carson’s Crown) also ran well. He broke a little bit poorly, but he closed really well.”

JEFF BONDE, AMARISH, Sixth: He (Edwin Maldonado) said the horse was going really easy down the backside and didn’t mind being inside. He got to the quarter pole, took a couple of deep breaths and shut it down. We’ll scope him and go from there.”
