Jockey Quotes

EDWIN MALDONADO, AMARISH, Winner: “I didn’t want to be next to the other horse (Run to Ground) because I didn’t want to go too fast the first quarter. No reason to bang heads with that horse. I just stayed to the outside and just let him run his race. He went in 21 3/5 last time and today they went 22 and change (22.19) and he was doing it easy. He’s so big and has such a long stride. I breezed him (three furlongs in 35 3/5 June 12) and he did it with his ears forward. I was really confident.”

AGAPITO DELGADILLO, MORENO’S MINE, Second: “He ran well. He just wants to go a little farther.”

JULIO GARCIA, UNDRAFTED, Third: “We had no excuses. We got close to the favored horse (Amarish) but couldn’t keep up. My horse didn’t change leads, but the winner was too good.”

Trainer Quotes

JEFF BONDE, AMARISH, Winner: “(Maldonado) said he was not (lugging) out, he just didn’t want him near the other horse. He’s a very talented horse, no question about it. In our opinion, he was pretty impressive today. Every time I try to hook him up with somebody (in the morning), he just hammers them. He’s very competitive and good minded. He walks like a horse who has done it a hundred times. We’ll have a team meeting to figure out what’s next.’’

ERIC GUILLOT, MORENO’S MINE, Second: “He ran well, but needs to go longer eventually. The winner looked like he was getting out most of the race, so we’ll probably come back in the (Grade III, $150,000) Hollywood Juvenile Championship (July 14).’’
