Jockey Quotes

GARRETT GOMEZ, CHARM THE MAKER, Winner: “She’s doing things the right way. I was hoping she’d kick on a little better than she did today. But the pace wasn’t very fast and they finished up pretty well. She never really folded on me, she kept doing just enough. I was happy with the way she kept responding to what I was asking her to do. In the middle of the turn, it kind of bothered me that I was having a little problem picking them up, but I kind of gave her time. She’s a long-striding thing and I knew her stride would kick in sooner or later. She kept staying on and staying on and she finished up well.”

JOE TALAMO, KILLER GRACES, Second: “We had a perfect trip. The best filly just beat us today. She was pressed the whole way, but we went so slow. But she ran her race. She loves this track. She won those two races here last summer and she just gets over it so well. It was a good race for her.”

Trainer Quotes

RON MCANALLY, CHARM THE MAKER, Winner: “We thought she was a good filly when we bought her back. We bred her and bought her back for $400,000 at the Keeneland sale. We also bought back the filly (Special Charm, who finished third in the sixth) that ran in the previous race. I thought there would be a faster pace. That’s why the rider had to get after her more than he thought he would. We’ll savor this one, but the (Grade I, $250,000 guaranteed Hollywood) Starlet (Dec. 10) is the most logical place to run next. We’re looking forward to running her on turf. Her dam (Charm the Giant) won the (2007) Wilshire on the turf here.’’

Notes: The win was the first in a stakes at the Autumn meet since Charm the Giant won the Intercontinental Handicap Nov. 28, 2007…The Hall of Fame trainer’s most recent stakes win at Hollywood Park was with Sugarinthemorning in the Manhattan Beach June 18….Gomez is the first jockey to win the Sharp Cat twice. His earlier victory came in 2006 with Runway Rosie.
