Jockey Quotes

JOE TALAMO, KILLER GRACES, Winner: “Perfect trip. I was happy to see they had a little speed duel up there. She does what she always does, kind of relaxes back there and has that real nice turn of foot the last part. She’s just developing so well, race after race. Later on she’ll be able to stretch out, the seven-eighths in the Del Mar Debutante is great. We’re hoping for a big year with her. She trains like that and obviously she runs like that in the afternoon.”

MARTIN PEDROZA, WOEBEGON, Fourth: “Me, I’m not a trainer, but I still think those horses shouldn’t beat my horse. I think she just came back too soon. My opinion. I promise you, they won’t beat this filly next time.”

Trainer Quotes

DAN WARD (Asst. Trainer), KILLER GRACES, Winner: “I liked it on the backstretch when all the horses were up front. I knew she was going to come running. (Talamo) has worked her every time and it’s like whoosh, she just runs by them. She’s been putting on weight and has great color. I think the further, the better. (Trainer) Jerry (Hollendorfer) watched her first race (May 1), went and looked at her and fell in love with her. I think they paid $150,000, which is a lot for running in just one maiden race. She’s going to prove to be worth a lot more than that. The Sorrento Stakes is probably next.”

MELODY CONLON, MIGHTY CAROLINE, Second: “She went a little fast early, but we were really happy with her race. She had speed first time out, but I thought she’d relax more in this race. We’ve been working her slow and trying to get her to relax, but she’s so aggressive.”

Notes: Talamo was the first rider to win successive runnings of the Landaluce since Pedroza won three times in a row (1990-1992) for trainer Brian Mayberry…The $150,000 Sorrento Stakes, a Grade III at 6 ½ furlongs, will be run Aug. 5 at Del Mar while the $250,000 Del Mar Debutante, a Grade I at seven furlongs, is set for Sept. 3.
