Jockey Quotes

VICTOR ESPINOZA, LA NEZ, Winner: “Everything set up well for me. She broke sharp and sat in right behind those two horses on the lead. I was just cruising down the lane. She’s doing so well right now. The turf is a little bit soft out there, but she handled it real nice.”

RAFAEL BEJARANO, PERFECT VINTAGE, Second: “I didn’t really have much of a choice except to send her to the lead from the inside. If I tried to take her back, I would have been caught behind all the speed and my horse really doesn’t like too much pressure. A pretty good horse beat me. My mare ran really well, she was running all the way to the end.”

JOEL ROSARIO, U R ALL THAT I AM, Third: “The winner had a much better trip than we did. My filly didn’t break real well and I knew they were going slow. I couldn’t get a position early. I think it cost me the race. I never had a chance to get in the clear. I wanted to stay inside but there was just nowhere to go. We’ll get them next time.”

Trainer Quotes

J. ERIC KRULJAC, LA NEZ, Winner: “Just a thrill. She likes Cal Cup day. She was very keen she wanted to go to the lead. She’s just been training so well. She’s just good. The mile race isn’t her deal. I think her career on the grass coming down the hill might open up new opportunities for her and she’s going to have to run against open races but the way she ran today she can develop in to something.

“I have to talk to the owners but It makes sense to give her two months and come back for the La Brea (in December at Santa Anita). We might take one more stab at the Grade I providing she is doing well.’’

ED MOGER, PERFECT VINTAGE, Second: “She ran great. The post helped her a lot, because she saved a lot of ground in that first turn. She got pressured all the way – it would have been nice to see her lay off a little bit. Rafael says she loved the grass. She ran hard, and so she probably just got outrun.’’

Notes: The win was the 16th lifetime for Espinoza in the California Cup, tying him for second with Alex Solis….Corey Nakatani leads with 17 victories….La Nez won the Cal Cup Juvenile Fillies in 2009.
