Mike Superstein's Hollywood Park Analysis for Saturday, July 12
RACE ONE
WINNING TACTICS didn't run badly at all in his June 21 comeback, finishing just a length back in fifth. He likely needed the race and can spring a mild upset in a weak field. SIX AGAIN has now compiled 20 losses to go along with his lone win. This one doesn't have much heart, but he's probably sound as his former trainer (Sergio Fiscal) claimed him back. WILD MCDREAMIE just returned from the vet's list and stopped. However he has speed, Tyler Baze rides back, he puts blinkers back on and has trained solidly since.
RACE TWO
ZETTERBERG had a world of trouble in his June 20 comeback, yet was able to score his initial victory. Full of run but blocked hopelessly along the rail entering the lane, ZETTERBERG had to steady and go around three rivals and was able to get up in the last jump. He should be able to handle these first-level allowance foes under new rider Garrett Gomez. BEYOND LOADED no doubt will take action, but is vulnerable. The Cliff Sise protégé's form was much better last year. BASHERT pressed the pace in his return from an eight-month layoff before tiring to third. He'll be much fitter this time around.
RACE THREE
WIREDFORTWOTWENTY deserved a better fate first time postward. The son of Greatness vied through fast early fractions and didn't yield until deep stretch, losing by less than two lengths. A similar effort gets the money today for hot trainer Brian Koriner. MORE HUMOR opened up a length lead at the eighth pole but couldn't hold on. He has an improving pattern and a fine trainer, so beware. MR. CHIPS was fifth in a strong sprint at Santa Anita, his only start. He'll be stalking the pace from the outside and is not without a chance.
RACE FOUR
PREMIUM QUALITY was more into the race early in his first turf start and ran an improved second. The $385,000 Keeneland auction purchase may have found a home on grass. SKY VICTOR has trained like he means business for Koriner, including a bullet move of 47 3/5 and 58 flat. It would be no surprise if he won at first asking. Gomez climbs about beginner YOUTHFUL AMBITION for Richard Mandella. Though the workouts aren't flashy, Gomez is aboard for a reason.
RACE FIVE
BEAU SMOKE fizzled at a short price in his most recent start. Since T Baze strings along and his previous two outings were very good, we're willing to give him one more chance. LEMON has been stuck on fourths recently, but those were much tougher races. He faces a weak field for the class and might snap his one for 19 hex. CANDY PULL is a deep closer, but is in solid form. The race shape is primary factor against him.
RACE SIX
Second in both starts, CANDILEJAS is ready to break through for Mullins. Her last race was especially impressive, closing steadily on top prospect Evita Argentina. STORMY GIGI, another live Koriner entrant, is bred to win early (Storm Boot) and has trained forwardly. Watch the betting activity for a clue. ANNIHILATION ran better than looked first time out. The Northern Afleet filly raced very greenly and should improve second time around. She'll be a giant price.
RACE SEVEN
RESTLESS SOUL tipped her talent with a late-running second to repeat winner Ransom Captive in her United States debut. She looks to have a bright future for Ben Cecil. LE CIRQUE has found the winner's circle only once in 17 tries. She's more comfortable settling for minor awards, with four seconds and three thirds. SAGA CELEBRE showed hints of talent while racing in Ireland. Now conditioned by Paddy Gallagher, 'CELEBRE will be piloted by Gomez.
RACE EIGHT
TWO STEP SALSA doesn't have the resume of COLONEL JOHN, but he's got the condition advantage and is improving at a rapid rate. The Julio Canani trainee has speed and heart, which he put on display in winning the Laz Barrera Stakes and Affirmed Handicap this meeting. COLONEL JOHN is clearly the class of the race with victories in the Real Quiet and Sham Stakes along with the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby. He had a legitimate excuse behind Big Brown in the Kentucky Derby and has worked like his old self recently. Still, he'll be a short price and the top choice is a better gamble today. TRES BORRACHOS chased 'SALSA to the wire and should hold off the others.
RACE NINE
HUMIDITY closed strongly to just miss in her last start. The Unusual Heat offspring might finally break her maiden in her tenth start at the tender age of six. AFTERNOON GOLD seemed to lose interest late after taking a brief lead at the top of the stretch. The move from Delgadillo to Gomez should rectify that situation. OUR STORM was second in her first start since November and helps make this a difficult betting contest.
