INGLEWOOD, CA (June 27, 2008)--Taking advantage of a blistering speed duel, Robert J. O'Neill Trust's Highland Torree came charging down the center of Cushion Track to easily capture Friday's $55,944 Optional Claiming feature at Hollywood Park.
Under patient handling by Martin Garcia, Highland Torree bided her time near the back of the pack while favored Overly Tempting and Wickednwackyingrid ding donged through rapid splits of :21 4/5 and :44 4/5. Highland Toree and Brendolyn started their move together approaching the half-mile pole.
Entering the lane, the pair engulfed the tiring leaders, with Highland Torree going around and the Brendolyn diving to the inside. In the last eighth of a mile, Highland Torree asserted her supriority and drew away from Brendolyn to win by three and one-half lengths. Overly tempting was able to hold the show, four and three-quarter lengths behind Brendolyn. The Kentucky-bred daughter of Menifee completed the 6 1-2 furlongs in 1:08 3/5.
In winning, Highland Torree made it two straight and scored for the third time in seven tries this year for trainer Rafael De Leon. The $32,400 winner's share brought her lifetime earnings to $131,040.
