INGLEWOOD, Calif. (June 25, 2008) - Crimson Star, a 13-1 shot ridden by Luis Contreras, caught pacesetter Enactment in deep stretch and held off odds-on favorite Afleet Ruler by a three-quarters of a length to win Wednesday's $55,072 feature at Hollywood Park, setting up a two-day Pick Six carryover of $747,253.
Crimson Star, trained by Christopher Paasch for Charles Cono, covered one mile on the Lakeside Turf Course in 1:36.56 while paying $29, $6.60 and $4.20. Afleet Ruler, ridden by Rafael Bejarano paid $2.20 and $2.10, while the show payoff on Enactment with Corey Nakatani up was $5.
With a Pick Six carryover of $172,556 entering Wednesday's program, an additional $1,035,125 was wagered. Longshots ruled throughout the day, setting up the huge carryover for Thursday's program.
Crimson Star, a 3-year-old grey/roan gelding, was starting for just the fifth time. He broke his maiden two starts back at Bay Meadows and was fifth here in his previous start - also at one mile on turf.
The victory, worth $31,800, raised Crimson Star's earnings to $54,620.
