Epic Power Disqualified, Favorite Gets Nod At Hollypark
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (June 5, 2008) - Hard luck Epic Power, who finished ahead of Lava Man while running second in the TVG Khaled Stakes in his last start, appeared to end a ten-race winless drought Thursday, only to be disqualified and placed last in the $63,000 feature at Hollywood Park.
The 7-year-old, who has been the runner-up on five occasions during his winless streak, finished a nose in front of favorite Hello Sunday, but was disqualified for interference in the stretch, squelching what would have been his 13th win. He veered in midway through the stretch under jockey Martin Garcia, interfering with Hello Sunday and eventual fifth-place finisher Fight On, resulting in his disqualification to last in the field of five.
French-bred Hello Sunday, a 5-year-old horse from the Bobby Frankel stable with leading jockey Rafael Bejarano up, won for the fifth time in 23 starts. He paid $4.60 while banking $37,800 to increase his earnings to $372,628.
