Madeo Meets Snow Chief Winner Harlene In Saturday's Alydar
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (May 22, 2008) - Madeo, impressive winner of two straight races, will meet longshot Cal National Snow Chief winner Harlene in Saturday's $75,000 Alydar Stakes at Hollywood Park.
Madeo, a home-bred owned by Jerry and Ann Moss and trained by John Shirreffs, broke his maiden by a comfortable 6¼ lengths in his second career start, then cruised to a come-from-behind victory in a 1 1/16-mile allowance test here April 30.
Harlene broke his maiden in style, rallying in his seventh start to win the $250,000 Snow Chief at the Alydar distance of 1 1/8 miles on April 27. He returned $69.80 for a $2 win wager.
Harlene, trained by Doug O'Neill for a partnership headed by Royce S. Jamie, also finished third in the Cal Cup Juvenile last fall and easily tops the field with earnings of $183,500.
The Alydar, which will run as the second race on Saturday's card, lines up as follows from the rail out:
Exuna, with Joel Rosario up, carries 117 pounds; Madeo, Mike Smith, 119; Pistol Pete Afleet, Aaron Gryder, 119; Trevor's Clever, Richard Migliore, 117; Bingham, Tyler Baze, 119, and Harlene, Michael Baze, 119.
Bingham meets tougher after winning two of three starts at Turf Paradise; Pistol Pete Afleet shifts to the Jorge Periban stable after being claimed for $80,000 from his last start; Exuma enters following a maiden win at 1 1/8 miles, and Trevor's Clever tries to rebound after finishing seventh behind Madeo in his last outing.
