INGLEWOOD, Calif. (May 8, 2008) - Honored Gold looked like a winner as she moved three-wide into contention on the turn for home, but pacesetter Moujane had different ideas and held on in the stretch to win Thursday's $57,000 allowance feature at Hollywood Park by a neck under jockey Alex Solis.
The victory was the third in four 2008 starts for the 4-year-old daughter of Alphabet Soup.
Moujane, who ran along the rail while leading from the break, did not give an inch in the final furlong while covering one mile on the Lakeside Turf Course in 1:35.49.
The third choice in the field of seven fillies and mares, Moujane paid $11.60, $5.20 and $4. Honored Gold, the 8-5 favorite under Corey Nakatani, returned $3.20 and $2.40. Ainamaa, ridden by Brice Blanc, finished another 1¾ lengths back in third and paid $3.20.
Moujane, owned by Jane Field and trained by Rafael Becerra, won her first two starts of 2008 before finishing third in the Santa Lucia Handicap in April at Santa Anita. The winner's share of $34,200 raised her earnings to $144,718.
Solis and Becerra also combined to win the fourth race with Drewthegentleman.
