Cushion Track Construction Project Photo Gallery
Work began July 18, 2006 to replace the Hollywood Park main track with Cushion Track, an engineered surface made by Equestrian Surfaces of Burnley, England. Cushion Track is composed of silica sand mixed with synthetic fibers, elastic fiber, and granulated rubber. The material is coated with a blend of wax.
The project consisted of the removal of the top twelve inches of the existing racetrack, followed by installation of an extensive drainage system that included five miles of pipe, a base of porous rocks, a layer of of geotextile membrane,
a seven-inch top layer of Cushion Track and the installation of a new rail.
The project was completed on September 13, 2006.
Hollywood Park was the first California track to install an engineered surface.
